Died: 26 Jan 1871, Clinton, Indiana
Was a U.S. Representative from Indiana ; Colonel and was breveted twice as Brigadier General and Major General in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was part of the 18th Indiana Co. that fought at Port Gibson and Champion Hill, and took part of the siege around Vicksburg, where he commanded a brigade during the initial assault upon the enemy fortress in May 1863.
President Abraham Lincoln nominated Washburn for appointment to the grade of Brevet Brigadier General of Volunteers. Also President Andrew Johnson nominated Washburn for appointment to the grade of Brevet Major General for Volunteers.
He was appointed Surveyor General of Montana that's now Yellowstone National Park in 1869 by President Grant. He was part of the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition to explore Yellowstone. Washburn founded Old Faithful Geyser, and Mount Washburn.
